The closer we get to the light, the dirtier we look.

When I was in middle school we went to the gym one day to see how dirty we were. A really interactive, fun activity for middle school kids who don’t shower. Let’s see how dirty these disgusting small humans are. Great idea, education system.

We did the blue light test. We would go into this dark room and they would shine this blue light on our hands and arms and faces. The places on us that were dirty would be shown in ways we had never seen before. It was like Christmas on our hands. Except not nice Santa and gifts. More like thug Santa trying to give me some type of disease.

The closer we got to the light, the truer we saw ourselves.

I see this in my relationship with Christ. The closer I get to Jesus, the dirtier my sin is. That’s how truth works. The truer your relationship with Jesus, the truer you see your sin. You begin to see it for the thug sin it is, rather than just a “struggle.”

Jesus said, This is the verdict: Light has come into the world, but men loved darkness instead of light because their deeds were evil. Everyone who does evil hates the light, and will not come into the light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But whoever lives by the truth comes into the light, so that it may be seen plainly that what he has done has been done through God. (John 3:19-21 NIV ’84)

Here’s the question: Is your sin just a “struggle” because you aren’t that close to the Light? I know mine has been before. “Gossiping is just something I struggle with.”

“I’m a guy, so I naturally struggle with lust.”

“I’m insecure, just what I struggle with.”

Maybe it’s time to start getting closer to the Light, so we see what our sin really is: sin and who we really are in Jesus.

“Gossiping is sin.” It is a lie. The truth is Jesus died for that person we gossip about just as much as he died for us.

“Lust is sin.” It is a lie. The truth is Jesus died to clothe us in the Spirit, not in the sinful nature.

“Insecurity is sin.” It is a lie. The truth is Jesus died to make us a co-heir with him.

The closer we get to the Light, the truer we see our sin and ourselves.

Believe the truth today, not a lie.
